What to expect from a mystery holiday to the Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca lies on the eastern shores of Spain like a mainland version of one of the Balearic Islands. 

Its main city is Alicante – one which dazzles in more ways than one. Its El Barrio old town neighbourhood is a vibrant area of quaint and largely pedestrianised streets surrounded by historic whitewashed homes. These lead towards Santa Barbara Castle, one of the largest in Spain.

More on the region’s history can be uncovered at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (known as MARQ), though us Brits will probably be looking to spend most of our time in on the sands of beaches stretching as far as the resort towns of Benidorm, Villajoyosa, Altea and Javea.

Whichever Costa Blanca town you’re staying in, Alicante is well worth checking out. It can be broadly divided into three main neighbourhoods. Take a stroll along La Explanada de España promenade and you’ll find the city centre’s intriguing mix of old and new. Jump to the Old Town for a sense of a Spain lost elsewhere and attractions including the attractive town hall and cathedral of Saint Nicolas. Alicante’s beaches make up its final neighbourhood, and come with all the facilities and amenities you need to relax away from it all.
