What to expect from a mystery holiday to Bali

Part of the famed Coral Triangle, the seas that surround Bali are both alive with life and bathtub warm, making snorkelling and scuba diving popular past times whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned pro.

Many visitors spend the rest of their time on Bali in and around its beaches – and with good reason. But there’s also plenty more to discover, from the UNESCO listed Subak paddy field irrigation system to the only Hindu-majority population across Indonesia’s 17,000 islands.

This unique culture makes itself known through a range of traditional art forms, including dance, painting and handicrafts. Head in the direction of any drumming you come across and you’ll probably find yourself in the midst of one of the island’s festivals. Meanwhile, watching sunrise from the summit of Mount Batur is something you won’t want to miss despite the early wake up call.

Good to know before you go to bali

Lots of businesses accept credit and debit card payments, including the various ride-hailing apps that now operate on Bali. However, you’ll still need a good supply of local currency to visit temples or eat at local roadside eateries, and ATMs can be hard to find outside of big population centres, so make sure you grab some cash when you can.

Mopeds are a popular way to get around especially in traffic heavy centres, but they don’t come without risk. You can check the quality of moped taxi drivers using ride-hailing apps. Even so, always wear a helmet – the driver should have one for you.

You should look to dress respectfully when off the beach, and particularly when visiting religious sites. Long shorts and skirts are a good option for the weather too, while guys (and girls!) wandering around topless is a definitely no-no.
