What to expect with a mystery Holiday at Cape Town
The oldest city in South Africa, and as a result its most impressive historically, is awash with unmissable heritage sites, from the Castle of Good Hope, to the prison on nearby Robben Island where Nobel prize winner and later national president Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for almost three decades.
The island, alongside many of Cape Town’s other major landmarks are visible from Table Mountain. Whether you take the rotating cable car to the summit, or chose instead one of the many hiking routes, it’s an unmissable part of the Cape Town experience.
So is Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden on the inland slopes of the mountain. But if you can’t get there, head instead to Company’s Gardens, intricately linked to the founding of the city and surrounded by several major museums.
Good to know before you go to Cape Town
The City Bowl area, dominated by the bars and shops of Long Street, is generally safe to explore on foot during the day, but be sure to arrange a reputable taxi (Uber operates in Cape Town) to get you about after dark. Similarly, although it’s not recommended to explore the Cape Flats township independently, organised tours are a safe alternative, with the best putting money back into the local community that has helped host you.
Tipping 10% of your bill at restaurants is a standard for Cape Town, where take home pay remains pretty low, with rates of 15% usually expected in areas with higher tourist footfall. A small amount, generally a ten rand note should be given to anyone whose been of minor service, such as a porter at a hotel or a security guard at a car park – even if they are doing it unofficially.
