What to expect from a mystery holiday to the Greek Islands

Uncover Corfu’s beauty
One of Greece’s northernmost Ionian Sea Islands, Corfu is nestled exotically off the coasts of Greece to the south and Albania to the north.
Known for its beautifully well-maintained beachside resorts, its warm waters have been a haven for holiday makers for decades. But drift inland and you’ll also find mountains that are rugged in all the right places, and villages which still move to an ancient beat.
Whether you stay in Corfu Town, the island capital, or one of its resorts, don’t miss the chance to take in either one of Corfu’s impressive Venetian-built forts, lanes that still have their ancient medieval street patterns, or the Grand Palace of St Michael and St George.

Take a chance on Crete
The largest of the Greek islands, Crete has a coastline spanning an impressive 650 miles, so you can be sure there are plenty of spots in which to throw down a beach towel whether you’re seeking out the high hedonist dream or looking to escape from it all.
The adventurous will be sure to want to head to Mount Ida, the island’s highest point at over 8,000 feet in height, or opt for the slightly less vertigo inducing but no less beautiful White Mountains, also known as the Lefka Ori.
The natural beauty continues at the Samaria Gorge, a World Biosphere Reserve, while no trip to Crete should be considered complete without also taking a tour of the ruins of Knossos, including the Minoan Palace complex.

Explore the roads of Rhodes
Master of the Dodecanese Island group, Rhodes has a rugged yet beautiful geography as fine as any island in the Mediterranean Sea.
With beaches situated at regular intervals along the island’s shores, which predominately face east and west, there’s no limit to the ability to soak up the fine year-round sun.
Elsewhere, ancient ruins provide the perfect focal point for a short hike or village exploration, while the Palace of the Grand Masters of the Knights of St John, a crucial fortification during the crusades, has to be one of Europe’s last true hidden gems.

Sun, sea and Zante
Also known as Zakynthos, Zante is an Ionian Sea resort island with beaches that are sure to meet the expert eye of even the most experienced lover of the sands.
Its long history of resorts ensures there are a huge array of attractions to keep travellers busy, with water sports a popular way to enjoy the excellent climate, alongside daytrips to Navagio Beach, only accessible by boat and the location of a picturesque shipwreck since 1980.
The south of Zante, around Laganas, is also known for its nightlife, with many clubs and bars open right through the night until dawn. But those seeking out the quieter side of life can find plenty of that on Zante too.
Good to know before exploring the Greek Islands
Quad bikes and mopeds are a popular way to get around many of the Greek Islands. However, unless you’re experienced on these vehicles, the narrow winding roads and speeding traffic can result in a trip to the Emergency Room. Our Mystery Holidays tip is to hire a car instead, or make use of each island’s bus network. The tourist offices will be able to provide route and timetable information.
It can be tempting to pack in as many islands as possible into one trip, especially when they can be spotted from one another. But we recommend limiting your stay to just the one island, so you can really get to know the destination, and avoid the worry of delayed or cancelled ferry crossings!
