What to expect from a mystery holiday to Hawaii
Lying around 2,000 miles off the US west coast in the North Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian islands are known for their subtropical sun and soft sand beaches, which range from white to black and even green!
The birthplace of surfing, Hawaii remains one of the top places in the world to jump on a board, while others on a mystery holiday might be just as happy joining an after dark tour in search of nesting turtles.
Nighttime is also the best time of day to witness Hawaii’s near-constant grumbles of its volcanoes, sometimes lighting up the darkness with newly-flowing lava, particularly at Volcanoes National Park. For culture, there’s a good chance you’ll receive a luau (flower garland) at some point during your stay. Keep an eye out for spam musubi on menus, and the possibility of traditional hula dancing too.
Good to know before you go to Hawaii
It may be a long old way from the mainland, but Hawaii is very much a part of the United States, so you’ll need to abide by all US immigration procedures. For British passport holders, that probably means obtaining an ETSA visa-waiver before travel.
Some of Hawaii’s state parks require non-residents to book in advance, so if there’s an attraction you absolutely must visit, be sure to keep this in mind. Tickets are released 30 days ahead of time, and can sell out.
Standard suncream is banned in Hawaii because it damages the islands’ fragile corals. But you will want something to protect yourself from the sun, so seek out a coral-safe cream containing zinc oxide rather than the likes of oxybenzone or octinoxate.
