What to expect from a mystery holiday in Hong Kong
A mix of east and west, ancient and modern, Hong Kong offers escapes that are able to combine both the pleasures of a lively city break and time in the city’s pockets of greenery.
Hong Kong island contains many of the destinations most famous sights, including the waters of Victoria Harbour, the tree cover of Victoria Peak rising up among the city’s tallest buildings and attractions including Ocean Park theme park.
North of Victoria Harbour lies Kowloon, which has become a hub for shopping and culture from its very humble origins. For an idea of the cityscape beyond street level, head to the Sky100 observation deck which sits on the 100th floor of its building. For local atmosphere, look no further than Temple Street, home to a well-known flea and night market.
Good to know before you go to Hong Kong
There’s an airport departure tax of HK$200 per person (that’s about £20). It might be included in your ticket, but it’s best to check so you don’t get caught out at the last minute.
Public transport is a great way to get around the city, as long as you avoid the morning and afternoon rush hours. It’s made up of the MTR, buses, trams and the city’s famous Star Ferries. An icon of the city, you should take at least one trip on a Star Ferry before heading home.
Harking back to the times when Hong Kong was part of the British Empire – something that only ended in 1997 – in an emergency you can contact the police, ambulance and fire departments on 999.
