What to expect from a mystery holiday to Mauritius
Not inhabited by humans until around 1500, Mauritius is an island for which the word unique was invented. Everywhere you turn there’s the possibility of bumping into an animal or sight found almost nowhere else.
You’re too late to spot a dodo – they became extinct in the late 1600s – but don’t let that put you off.
Just as an example, the coral reefs that exist just offshore are so full of fascinating lifeforms that you won’t know where to look, with larger visitors including sea turtles, dolphins and sharks.
Fought over by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and English, Mauritius also has a fascinating culture blending elements from Europe, Africa and Asia. This can best be seen in the capital of Port Louis, whose sprawling marketplace is a must, but can be encountered right across the island. Since Mauritians are incredibly friendly, you certainly won’t be short of new friends should you choose to do this.
Good to know before you go to Mauritius
All the beaches of Mauritius are public, even if they have a hotel or resort sitting beside them. This means travellers to the island have a wealth of beach spots to opt between, so you might want to get some local advice on which would be the best to visit on any given day.
If you’re looking to take advantage of some or all of the island’s attractions, it can often be a similar price to hire a private driver for the day rather than joining an organised tour. Your accommodation will be able to recommend a trustworthy local.
Port Louis’ central market is a fantastic place not just to top up on locally-grown tropical fruits, but also to sample the island’s street food. Examples include dhal puri (flatbread parcels filled with curried lentils) and rougaille (tomato stew). Try them all!
