What to expect on a mystery holiday to St Lucia

English-speaking St Lucia is an island of two halves, and each half is deserving of some of your time. When it comes to international travel, it’s the west side of the island that’s the most popular.

Facing into the warm, calm waters of the Caribbean, the west has many of the island’s favourite beaches, as well as Sulphur Springs Park, where you can daub yourself from the mud of the world’s only drive-in volcano, plus the twin peaks of the Pitons.

Meanwhile, the east of the island is altogether wilder, featuring beaches that see the arrival of nesting turtles, waterfalls only locals know about. There are forests that are home to the St Lucia parrot and island nature reserves that have become the last refuge of highly-endangered whiptail lizards.

Good to know before you go to St Lucia

All visitors to the island, regardless of their passport, have to complete a simple immigration form found online before arrival. You’ll be asked for the QR code it produces at customs and immigration, which then gives all your relevant details to the authorities without you having to search out a biro after a long flight.

You’ll want to pack some insect repellent and use the mosquito net provided by your accommodation. Not only will this make you feel rather regal, but it will stop the island’s mosquitos from interrupting your otherwise perfect night’s sleep.
