What to expect from a mystery holiday to The Balkans

Fall for the charms of Bucharest
The capital of Romania, Bucharest is as grand as any capital in central or eastern Europe, with wide tree-lined boulevards leading from noteworthy attraction to noteworthy attraction.
Standing out amongst the crowd is Calea Victoriei, a street full of charms said to be the city’s oldest. Meanwhile, Bucharest’s Palace of the Parliament building takes some beating, and is said to be both one of the largest and heaviest structures anywhere in the world. Tours offer the chance to slip inside, and admire interiors meant to be the envy of the world.
Elsewhere, visitors to Bucharest will find some of the best nightlife in this part of Europe. The food scene has come a long way since the days of rationing under communism, while the music scene has also grown and grown thanks to the city’s youthful population.

Discover new cultures in Sofia
Forming one of the meeting points of eastern and western culture, Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. It offers an intriguing introduction to a country which blends the Cyrillic alphabet with natural hot springs including Sofia Central Mineral Baths, beautifully ornate Orthodox churches, and some top shopping opportunities too.
Spanning two millennia, this city sits at the foot of Mount Vitosha, which offers superb panoramic views across its streets to attractions including the round church of St George, first constructed by Roman Christians, as well as surviving frescoes at Boyana Church that will leave you amazed.
Also not to be missed is the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, former Royal Palace, and the Gallery of Foreign Art, featuring some of the greatest works in European, Asian, and African art through the ages. Not what you expected from Sofia? Nor is the rest of the Bulgarian capital!

Uncover the delights of Tirana
Tirana’s long history makes the Albanian capital a fascinating place to visit. Situated amid a region of mountains, forests, and lakes, the centre of the city is today known for its mix of architectural styles, ranging from intricate Ottoman buildings to brutalist communist-era structures.
Providing an intriguing backdrop to the city, these structures are only the start of what Tirana has to offer. Begin at Skanderbeg Square, named after the national hero, and one of the largest public spaces in the world. Learn more about Albanian heritage at the National History Museum on the square’s northern side, allowing you to understand the relevance of many of the other beautiful structures you encounter when exploring this often overlooked gem.
Good to know before you go to the Balkans
The people of the Balkans have an immense pride in their home region, making Bucharest, Sofia, and Tirana are all safe and incredibly welcoming cities. We do however advise downloading a translation app to your phone (and ensuring you’re able to roam) since English can be limited at some attractions.
Take your time to enjoy a Balkan coffee in whichever Mystery Holidays destination you find yourself in. When the English stop for tea, these nationals stop for coffee, which is as much a part of the culture as the language or regional dress.
