What to expect from a mystery holiday in Tokyo
The most-populous city in Japan, Tokyo is where suit-clad business people rub shoulders with streetside vendors, teens staying up late into the night and kannushi or Shinto priests in traditional garb.
Sitting around Tokyo Bay, the Japanese capital was one of the first Japanese cities to open up to international trade, and is recognised as one of the most respectful to visitors as any city in the world.
As the capital, sights worthy of a detour aren’t hard to find – from the Diet (parliament) building to Tokyo Tower (think Eiffel Tower). Also check out the imperial palace at Edo Castle, which remains the residence of the world’s longest ruling dynasty.
Nor will you be short of places to eat, with Tokyo offering up some of the finest restaurants in the world, spanning Japanese cuisine from sushi to katsu.
Good to know before you go to Tokyo
Although English is spoken more and more every day, it’s well worth having access to a translation app on your mobile to make sure you can make yourself understood. These apps can also be really useful for navigating around the city, when signage is predominately in Japanese script.
If you aim to eat at a popular restaurant or café it’s a must to make a reservation. For many you can do this online. Otherwise you’re likely to find yourself in a long queue – Tokyo’s residents aren’t afraid to wait two hours for a table at their favourite restaurants to become available.
It’s considered incredible rude to take a call while riding on public transport and phones should be put on silent to avoid disturbing others. You’ll also want to dodge travelling during Tokyo’s rush hour, from 07.30–09.00 and 17.30–19.00, unless you’re not a big fan of personal space.
