What to expect from a mystery holiday to The Turkish Riviera
Be amazed by Antalya
The gateway to Turkey’s southern Mediterranean region, Antalya is a stunning city on an equally impressive stretch of shoreline. Its yacht-filled Old Harbour is an impressive site and occupies many a camera memory card with its beauty, while its beaches have been dubbed the Turquoise Coast because of the incredible colour of their waters.
Beyond the beach, Antalya can also boast an impressive array of ancient wonders, including the near two thousand year old Hadrian’s Gate, and similarly-aged Hidirlik Tower, offering uninterrupted panoramic views across the area.
Not far away you’ll find the dramatic form of the Taurus Mountains, though most visitors are content to make the most of their time along the shores of Antalya, and who can argue with that?
Delight in Dalaman
One of the Turkish Riviera’s lesser-known destinations, Dalaman has an incredible coastline made up of stunning beaches so lovely even loggerhead turtles come ashore, waters so clear they are almost magical, and a rich heritage that will have you wanting to know more.
The Dalyan River is the site of some fascinating ancient rock tombs, while Kaunos features a further glimpse into Turkey’s past with its ruins and grand amphitheatre.
The perfect place to discover with a boat tour, Dalaman also provides some excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving given the excellent visibility levels underwater, plus the chance to get the adrenaline flowing by paragliding from Oludeniz Beach.
More than get by in Bodrum
Featuring not one but two bays, covering both the southwest coast of Turkey and the Aegean Sea, travellers to Bodrum are spoilt for choice when it comes to coastal living.
A modern city with a rich ancient past, the harbourside is awash with beautiful yachts gently moving in the breeze, while older neighbourhoods have beautiful bougainvillea-clad lanes straight out of an impressionist painting filled with quaint cafes. Any one of them is a great place to sample a Turkish coffee before checking out the nearby artisan stores where you might find a souvenir.
Stick to its waterfront, and you’ll soon locate the impressive Bodrum Castle, now more than 600 years old, and housing the ever-impressive Museum of Underwater Archaeology, whose displays have been brought up from the seabed.
Good to know before exploring the Turkish Riviera
Although English is widely spoken in the resort towns of the Turkish Riviera, it’s fantastic to be able to share a few words with your host in their native language. So grab a phrasebook or app and impress those you meet.
It’s common practice to remove shoes when entering someone’s home as a mark of respect. This rule is even more fiercely enforced if visiting a mosque. There are usually dedicated locations to store your shoes safely. Likely, when visiting religious sites, it’s important to have your shoulders, midriff, and upper legs covered. We recommend keeping the beachwear for the beach!
