Step away from the water and you are immediately immersed in layers of time. You can grab a coffee right in the middle of a Roman Forum that dates back to the 1st century BC, or climb the bell tower of St. Anastasia’s Cathedral for a 360-degree view of red-tiled roofs and the sparkling Adriatic.
The city is compact and entirely walkable, meaning you can jump from ancient ruins to trendy wine bars in the Varoš neighborhood in under five minutes. It is laid-back, effortlessly cool, and arguably the most authentic slice of Croatia you can find.

Pack water shoes for pebbly spots like Kolovare Beach and Punta Bajlo to enjoy the clear Adriatic comfortably. While cards are widely accepted, keep some Euros in cash for local markets and small taverns.
To see the city at its best, visit the fish market early in the morning before heading to the waterfront for a world-class sunset.
