Best Autumn Mystery Breaks in Europe for Colourful Scenery

Autumn is a superb time for a short break in Europe, whether you’ve got your eye on an action-packed city break or a well-deserved rest by the beach.

The heat of the summer months has died away from the continent. Kids are generally back at school, and colours flattened by the sun in the heat of summer take on a much greater intensity than they have in previous months.

So whatever your interests, autumn holidays in Europe are well worth considering before the mad rush of Christmas and New Year begins!

Looking for inspiration? Here are five destinations we think deserve a mention, so you can find the best autumn break in Europe to suit your needs.

Who knows, you may even wish to experience the trip of a lifetime with our autumn mystery holidays — an exciting, adventurous way to see Europe.

1. Berlin

Ber-looming marvellous.

Let’s be fair to the German capital – Berlin is great at any time of year!

But as a city of parks, gardens, leafy avenues and surrounding woodland, it has to be one of the best autumn city breaks in Europe.

As the leaves of its many trees – famously linden, but also plane and horse chestnut among others – turn golden, the city and its people seem to let out a sigh of appreciation.

Many might even do this in English, since it’s sometimes joked that it’s hard to find a German speaker in the German capital.

Either way, these incredible cityscapes offer a plethora of attractions. Culture buffs will want to head straight to the collections of Museum Island, which contain items from around the world and span centuries.

History fans have the remaining sections of the Berlin Wall to admire, plus slightly cheesy Checkpoint Charlie, the reconstructed Reichstag, and the hauntingly beautiful Holocaust Memorial.

And let’s not forget that Berlin has some of the finest nightclubs in Europe.

New spots pop up all the time, so ask around, and should you wish there’s somewhere to stagger back from in the early morning any night of the week.

2. Cyprus

Relaxed sighs in Cyprus.

For many, Cyprus’s southern location in the Mediterranean makes it a summer destination.

And it’s fair to say that the island has long been a hot pick (excuse the pun) for summer family fun.

When the crowds head home at the end of August, Cyprus remains open. The island stays pretty warm too, and you won’t need much more than a light jacket in most parts of the country.

The Troodos Mountains take up about one third of the island’s area in total. Approachable from both Limassol and Larnaca, they offer up several intriguing hiking routes that you don’t need to be Bear Grylls to manage.

The Artemis Trail, for instance, rings the top of Cyprus’s tallest mountain, Mount Olympus, providing expansive views across wonderful landscapes of forest, streams and waterfalls.

The Troodos are also a magnet for lovers of all things locally made.

Wherever you head, you’ll find a village of just a few hundred people producing unique craft items, from intricate lacework to glass, silver filigree and pottery.

3. Salzburg

The hills are alive.

As a city with mountain (the ‘burg’ bit) in its name, Salzburg comes into its own when the weather starts to fall.

This Austrian city embraces autumn to the fullest. As a result, there’s little point in arguing against it for those considering a European city break in autumn.

What does Salzburg have to offer? How about incredible landscapes of none other than the Alps, Europe’s premier mountain range?

A short hop away, there’s absolutely nothing to stop you getting deep into The Sound of Music territory. Just try not to startle any mountain goats with your singing voice.

In the city itself, tree-lined streets swap the struggle of summer for the newfound vigour of autumnal colour.

Ever evocative and photogenic, the historic areas of the city around its river were also the stomping ground of Mozart.

It’s possible to visit both his birthplace and his home in the city to learn more about his effect on classical music to this day.

Those with a sweet tooth will also want to look out for Mozart Chocolates, balls of chocolate and marzipan, that bear the great man’s face.

4. Valencia

Coastal fantasies.

Fancy heading to one of the best places to visit in Europe in autumn without having to worry about the cold?

Valencia in southern Spain is another option to get excited about. Bordered by Spain’s seemingly endless Mediterranean Coast, you’ll still find locals and holidaymakers enjoying the sand at this time of year.

Situated on the mouth of the Turia River, there are plenty of dramatic landscapes to encounter too.

Cityscapes get little better than the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences neighbourhood, featuring an aquarium, opera house, and of course, a science museum.

Elsewhere, Valencia Cathedral displays what is said to be the Holy Grail (Indiana Jones eat your heart out) plus provides panoramic city views from its ancient tower.

Head out of the city, and you’ll find a verdant region of mountains, rivers and hills.

They often combine with the sea to provide a stunning backdrop to traditional Valencian paella and can be explored on foot or by car.

Our tip? Head to Desert de les Palmes Natural Park for your fill of nature.

5. The Baltics

Baltic, not Balkan.

Rounding off our pick of autumn breaks in Europe are the Baltic States.

Not to be confused with the Balkans further south, the Baltics sit in Europe’s north and can be thought of as the region where Scandinavia meets Eastern Europe.

As a result, you can be sure of plenty of sublime landscapes, whether that’s on secluded Baltic Sea beaches, in nature-rich river deltas or in any of the region’s other unique ecosystems.

Made up of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, these three countries are known to put the great outdoors into everything they do. What’s more, autumn is generally considered the best time to visit, alongside spring.

Though glorious landscapes may be ten a penny here, we have to suggest Curonian Spit National Park, protecting the habitats of a lagoon on the coast.

Here you’ll find six observation towers for looking out across the landscape.

Rich in birdlife, it’s also a very different view of the Baltic States, usually limited to its admittedly stunning medieval towns and cities.

All of the European autumn breaks we’ve listed in this guide could be allocated to you when you book a trip through Mystery Holidays. Enjoy a handpicked escape that’s designed to surprise and delight.
